I am looking for info on my father's other family. I am the son of James S.
Oliver Jr., born 1901 in Gloucester, MA, but returned to Antiganish at 2 or 3
years of age and lived on a farm there until he was 12. All of his brothers,
Alan, George, John and his sisters, Frances, Isobel, Ann and Mamie were born in
Antigonish. His father, James Sr.,DOB 1867, married Sarah MacDonald, DOB 1879.
My father was married there and had two children, John and Mary, before he came
back to Gloucester to fish. As far as I know, the farm was taken by eminent
domain for the TransCanadian highway in the late 50's or early 60's. If anyone
knows where I can find info on John or Mary Oliver or this family, could you
please contact me at Jay444P@AOL.com? I have visited several times, but didn't
know where or how to look. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you.

My last comment should not have reflected that I would not want to live
there. I still have family there and enjoy visits to N.S. My comment means to
say that I am happy where I am. I would never suggest that Antigonish County is
not a great place to live. At this time in my life I am very happy where I am
and maybe will return to retire to Antigonish County. I hope no one took my
previous comment as an insult towards Antigonish.

I was born and raised around the Antigonish Area. It is a very beautiful
place to visit. Myself, as I lived there for my first 17 years, I would not want
to live there. I do feel the people are genuine, honest, kind people. I do take
offense to the comments made by Chris Radway (deceiver09@aol.com) from Kutstown,

the nature that was perserved in setting up the trail. We are both from Pictou

hike made it more interesting. Meet some great people while hiking that

It is a 2 year's ago October when I moved to Antigonish with my mother and
sister. On the first day of school (Dr.Hugh MacPherson gr.5 B.Macdoygall) in
Antigonish, the kids were "jackasses" to me because I am an
Estonian/Canadian. I had trouble making friends in the first couple of months,
eventually I came to make friends. The adults in Antigonish are very
friendly(most) and the kids are (almost all) are extremely mean. If I had the
choice to re-live that day two years ago, I would have talked my mom right out
of moving. The area is very beautiful and I live right on the water.

I passed your way 25 years ago. We were driving up to the Cape Breton
highlands and stopped for a beautiful picnic in a field overlooking your town.
It was so beautiful that day that my wife, Rebecca, and I would like to come
back for another visit someday, perhaps next summer. Also we're writing a
biography of Norman Maclean, the author of A River Runs Through It. His father,
John Norman Maclean, who became a Presbyterian minister, apparently grew up in
Antigonish back in the 1870s. We'd like to know more about his early life there
(and also more about his five sisters who moved to Boston). So we could do a
little research for our book and enjoy a vacation at the same time. Of course,
we'd be happy to hear from anyone who knows anything about the Maclean clan
(maybe there's a town historian?) or who can suggest a nice time for us to come
to Antigonish. We'd probably come in the summer because it's always boiling hot
then down here in Georgia. At any rate, thanks for the great website!

I fell in love with Antigonish and Nova Scotia the first time my wife took me
'down home'. She spent all her summers in Mulgrave while growing up. Her name
was Gloria Cardile, her grandfather was Ed Brennan in Mulgrave. If anyone who
sees this knows her, drop her a line. She love to hear from you. And somebody
say hello to the MacDonalds in Antigonish for us!!!! We enjoyed our visit..

Hi, just searching around for my roots. My maternal great-grandmother was
from Antigonish. Her name was Margaret Fitzgerald and she was born sometime in
the late 1800's. She married Charles Hall from Prince Edward Island and they
came to the US after they were married. Their first child, Alice, was born in
1903 in Woburn, Massachusetts, I think. Anyone out there know the family.....
I'd love to hear from anyone who might remember the family, or any relatives
still living in Antigonish. I hope to vist some time soon! I married a Gallant,
whose grandfather was John Donat Gallant from Prince Edward Island....

I think that you should get good oictures of heatherto because what you see
is a place in the middle of nowhere. It is not that at all and there are more
backroads to heatherton than farm road. There's Frasers Grant, Black Avon,
Afton, bayfield, New France, just to name a few. there is also the heatherton
village I think you should include some of that.

Gorgeous photos throughout this site. I'm from Glasgow, Scotland and often
spent much time around the Scottish coastline -- saw some photos that almost
looked familiar! The wife and I will have to come visit this year during our
holidays. Found the site while looking for John Walsh Shuttle Pipes, which I'm
interested in adding to my Scottish Imports website.

What a wonderful page. You brought back fond memories of growing up on
Hawthorn Street. It has been 20 long years since I have been east of Montreal.
That's what I get for discovering this great country of ours. Your site brought
back such great memories, singing at St. Ninians Cathedral in the youth group,
biking to Mahoney's Beach to spend the day swimming and listening to the radio
or looking for frogs, sitting under heavenly elms on a hot summer day, kicking
through piles of maple leaves, fishing for suckers along Brierly Brook (under
the bridge) just to pass the time, or just zooming down that steep hill behind
the Student Union Building on my bike so fast I could swear I was flying as I
cut through the hot summer air. I remember wondering what kind of world was out
there waiting for me beyond the elms. "There must be something better than
this", I thought. Unfortunately, I am still looking. A great big hi to
everyone who knew me back then. You are all often in my thoughts. Drop me a
line.

When I was a boy my parents used to take my brothers and I to spend our
summers in Antigonish -- a few kilometers past Cape George... we stayed at
Whiddens Trailer Park by night (is it still there?) and spent our days enjoying
the area. Now that I am 34 and looking for a place to practice medicine I was
wondering if there was much of a need for an internist in Antigonish, the site
of so many pleasant memories. All replies will be acknowledged.

Kelly has asked a fair question; the guestbook has been downgraded lately by
back & forth chatter which makes it look like a cheap chat room. Also, if
people want to badmouth this nice town, look in the mirror.
george

Kelly, check out the letters to the whole family in "98", before
you become the critic. Some people don't have email address's and the only way
to respond is on the board. The odd chat is okay, the put downs of the town are
not.By the way, Antigonish is a beautiful town.

I lived in Truro when i was young and visited Antigonish often when I lived
there. I have since made a friend of a Antigonisher by the name of Dana Johnson.
Dana is a martial arts instructor (Tae Kwon-Do) and has become very successful
out here in Calgary. He has built himself a very solid and well respected
reputation as an instructor. Out here in western Canada it's not often that you
hear of a maritimer that has made the knid of impression that Dana has and you
should all be proud of him for the job he has done.

Just a quick comment to Allen, you should count yourself lucky to live in a
small town such as Antigonish. I from Antigonish to a OOHH SOOO GREAT BIG CITY,
guess where I live now? I small town, smaller then Antigonish. I got fed up
trying to raise two small boys in a place where at 3:30 pm just as the kids are
getting off the bus from school, you have three crack heads shooting up by the
playground and leaving thier shit for everyone to come in contact with.
Especially the kids.So stop your whinning and be thankful you have a place that
you should be proud of.

First of all, I would like to say that the town sucks. I have lived here all
of my life, and I would like to say that it sucks. It has driven me into
alcoholism and a love for big trucks. I really hate how you have failed to
mention anything about beavers or chickens, because I feel that they are a very
important part of our heritage. Please don't be offended at the previous
comments because there is nothing in the town that is any good because the town
sucks. Thank you. Allan Teasdale
